In botany, a single, robust, main root which
is derived from the embryonic root, or
radicle, and grows vertically downwards,
often for some considerable depth. Taproots
are often modified for food storage and are
common in biennial plants such as the carrot
Daucus carota, where they act as perennating
organs.
